Haiphong Road History
Many people may not know that Haiphong Road was originally named "Elgin Road" before being renamed. Its current name comes from the city of Haiphong in Vietnam, together with neighbouring Hanoi Road, it bears witness to a century of trade ties between Hong Kong and Southeast Asia. Haiphong Road was once a military barracks area and only gradually transformed into the commercial district we see today after the 1960s.
Haiphong Road Street Characteristics
If you have visited Tsim Sha Tsui many times, have you ever really walked along this "golden corridor"? The vacancy rate on this street is almost zero. According to records, at its peak, the largest transaction on Haiphong Road was the sale of Shop C on the ground floor of Hoi Lee Hong at No. 35‑37 Haiphong Road in 2012, with a transaction price of approximately HK$363 million. On the rental side, in 2013, Chow Sang Sang leased Shops A and B on the ground floor of Chung Tai Building at No. 38‑40 Haiphong Road for about HK$2.8 million per month. In short, Haiphong Road is a legend written in history, money, and foot traffic.
Haiphong Road Major Industries and Tenants
In the past, the street was almost entirely occupied by gold shops, jewellery and watch stores, and pharmacies. Today, trendy clothing shops and souvenir stores have also joined the mix.
